Before this garden was designed
and constructed the customer mentioned that there was occasionally a
problem with water collecting in
the garden. The
customers asked for a maintenance free, sunken garden with steps
down from a decked area.
The decking to be at the same level as the patio window; a
design was made with these requests in mind.
The decking was built and to create a sunken garden
the whole area had to be dug down to a depth of 500 mm. However, before the flags
were laid heavy rain fell and actually flooded all of the sunken
area. The water level
came right up to the decking and looked like a Harbour.
This was a much more serious problem than had
originally been anticipated.
All work had to be suspended until a solution could be
found. To resolve the
problem, a well had to be dug to create drainage. A well was dug, about 4 ft
deep x 2 ft wide in the corner of the garden and was camouflaged by
a grid and surrounded by plants. A suction pump could then be
inserted when heavy rain came and the water was diverted to the
house drain.
The flagged area had to be refilled back to its
original level before flags could be laid. Flags were laid in a diamond
shape design in the centre.
The garden has been softened by a variety of plants
and small shrubs and a trellis fence at the side of the house to
separate the garden and screen the customer’s shed and working
area.
The customer is a retired Sergeant Major in the Royal
Navy so he named the garden “The Harbour
Garden”.
